Peter and Paul fortress is the place where Saint-Petersburg’s history began. Built by Peter the Great during the Northern War to protect Russia from the Swedish assault once thought inevitable, it never served its military purpose, but became the new Russian capital’s foundation instead. Due to its historic significance and rich history Peter and Paul fortress had been one of the most popular tourist attractions of Saint-Petersburg.
There is a lot to do here, and in fact sometimes the fortress is being called “A City within the City”. You will see the ornate Peter and Paul Cathedral, the final resting place of almost all of the Russian Emperors from Peter the Great to Nicholas II; the active Saint-Petersburg Mint, one of the largest operating mints in the world; the prison complex used to house the enemies of Tsarist regime at first, and member of the said regime after the Bolshevik Revolution. If you are around at 12:00 pm/midday, don’t be scared by the traditional midday cannon shot – a tradition dating back to the days of the City founder, Emperor Peter.

The cruise lines say that no one is allowed off the ship in St. Petersburg cruise port that does not purchase a ship sponsored excursion or have arranged a Russian visa on their own. Is that correct?
That is false! The third option is to purchase an excursion with a government licensed St. Petersburg shore excursion operator who has permission to give visa-free excursions. Your "visa" is the excursion guide! With this excursion, you are ready to explore St. Petersburg with your guide for the duration of the excursion, everything is taken care of.
Can I go wander and explore on my own during this private St. Petersburg sightsee excursion?
Unfortunately no, as part of the visa-free St Petersburg cruise excursion, guests must stay with their excursion guide.
What documents will I need to get off the ship in St. Petersburg Russia?
Guests must present their valid passport and official EXCURSION Ticket from the operator and will have no problems clearing customs and immigration for their excursion.
Do I need to take my passport with me on the St. Petersburg Private Peterhof Palace with Hydrofoil Boat Excursion for Small Groups to show along with my Electronic Shore Excursion Ticket?

My favorite shore excursion ever see all the highlights of St Petersburg and learn from one of the best
csporich, Nov 2019
Two FULL days of touring the best that St Petersburg has to offer. Purchasing this tour online, processing it, getting emails answered (no matter how stupid my question), getting through customs and finding the guide in port was ALL super easy and much faster than I anticipated. The tour guide is chock full of information about every site, all the history of each site
